Book Club editions

At last, a page that has been waiting for over two years to be published! I had hoped to introduce this with a history of the Book Club but apart from knowing that Christina Foyle was instrumental in making the Book Club her own, my own knowledge is negligible. I had also been hopeful that Foyles would contribute knowledge from their archives but, regrettably, this has not been forthcoming, so I am left with presenting these editions just as they are. As you will see from browsing the page some of the jacket designs are works of art and I am thrilled that I have been able to capture them for posterity.

William Stewart of Halifax, Nova Scotia has very kindly pointed out to me that there is a very useful article on the development of Book Clubs in the 1930s by Terence Rodgers of Bath Spa University College entitled ‘The Right Book Club: Text Wars, Modernity and Cultural Politics in the Late Thirties’. The article appeared in the Manchester University Press Literature & History Journal, Volume 12 Issue 2 (Autumn 2003).
