DW first met Joan in 1929, when she walked into his shop to order some champagne for a ball. She was the sister of Bino Johnstone, one of DW's well connected staff.

According to DW's memoirs there was no immediate falling in love, but over time they became increasingly close. Eventually DW and Nancy parted and DW moved into a flat. He married Joan the following year.

Joan had been married twice before; in her youth to William (later Sir William) Younger of Auchen Castle in Scotland, with whom she had had four children - Meg, Bill, Jack and Diana. After they separated, she married Captain Hubert Pelham Burn, who died in a car crash. She had one son with Hubert Pelham Burn - Colin.

Joan outlived DW and died in 1982.
