Although DW was cleared for almost all Top Secret information, there was clearly some that it was not deemed necessary for him to know. That did not however prevent him from being interested – and indeed seeking - to know it.

In the above extract from his unpublished memoirs, DW reveals that one of his techniques was always to appear in the know – even if he wasn’t – when someone told him something he didn’t know and that was ‘Top Secret’. That was they would confide in him further next time.

As his memoirs further show, this resulted in his knowing not just about the rescue of the French general Giraud, but also about ‘Ultra’ when Johnny Bevan had not cleared him for it.
