Mervyn Baron was one of DW's oldest friends, and had kept him going when he was threatened with bankruptcy (See Room 5, Exhibit 12)

DW wrote in 'Drink and Ink':

"I have often been asked how many of my characters have been taken from real life. The answer is very few.

Simon Aron, the generous, kindly, little Jew who appeared in my first book, The Forbidden Territory', and several others featuring my four Modern Musketeers, was a deliberate portrait of my friend Mervyn Baron."
