One can perhaps imagine DW working away at these papers in the manner described by his friend and colleague James Arbuthnott in a letter he wrote to DW shortly after the war: ‘I can see you so vividly: the stop, the draw on the cigarette, the unseeing look into the middle distance and then another long spout on paper.’ [Letter to DW from James Arbuthnott dated 24th February 1946]
