The discovery of the body

The Daily Sketch 14th September 1923

The News of the World 16th September 1923

It was the best part of a year and a half before Gordon-Tombe's body was discovered, and the discovery was a media sensation. It was front page news in the tabloids of the day.

Gordon-Tombe's father had pestered the authorities to conduct a search of 'The Welcomes' and the investigation was handled by Superintendant Carlin, one of the most famous detectives of the day.

The tabloids increased the drama by saying that Gordon Tombe's father had seen the body lying in a cesspit in a dream. This was not in fact true - his researches had led him to the conclusion that his son's body was probably somewhere in that area.

DW kept an extensive archive of press cuttings covering the discovery of the body and subsequent developments. These cuttings come from DW's original archive.
