Up until sometime before the war, having completed the pencil manuscript, DW would re-write the entire novel in ink. Sometimes, as the page above from 'Julie's Lovers' shows, he didn't make any corrections. At other times, as is shown by the page from 'The Devil Rides Out' above, he made extensive corrections as he wrote the ink draft.

When he experimented with dictation (see the next exhibit), DW jettisoned both the pencil and ink manuscript drafts, and when he took up writing again after the war, he went back to writing pencil drafts but he no longer felt the need for the second, ink, drafts.
