After a thirty year absence from the silver screen, two of DW’s books were made into films by Hammer in the late 1960s.
‘The Devil Rides Out’, starring Sir Christopher Lee and Charles Gray was a great success and still retains cult status, while ‘The Lost Continent’, adapted from ‘Uncharted Seas’ and starring Eric Porter, was rather less of a success.
Sir Christopher Lee was a long time admirer of and neighbour of DW’s, and DW was so pleased with his depiction of the Duke that he gave him a signed first edition of the book expressing his thanks.
