Tanks Moate
Back in England after having been gassed, DW was first hospitalised, and was then sent to a convalescent home. Here he met a chubby tank lieutenant called 'Tanks' or 'Tanko' Moate.
As they recovered they had a good time, and Tank joined DW and Bertie Davis for a glass of champagne at the Savoy on 17th June 1922 before they went off to St James', Spanish Place, for DW's marriage to his first wife.
