DW read his reviews, and by-and-large, he was proud of them.

This is exemplified by the way in which he lavishly bound his American reviews - see above.

Where the reviews were less flattering, so long as they were constructive, he took note.

DW never forgot, for example, that when he wrote 'The Fabulous Valley', a reviewer wrote

'Mr Wheatley should make up his mind whether he is going to write a thriller of a guide-book'

and he learnt from it.
