One of the things that set DW apart from some of his peers was the enormous amount of time and effort he spent in replying to his fan mail. Indeed the first part of his daily routine was, when his secretary arrived at nine-thirty, to spend about an hour replying to his fan mail.

The thrilling nature of his stories apart, this must have cemented his appeal to his audience.
