DW mentioned in 'The Deception Planners' how, during 1943, Bevan asked him to write the history of the Section, and how one night, long before he had brought it up to date, someone had shown it to Bevan without his knowledge; and how the following day, Bevan had returned it to him remarking 'This won't do at all, Dennis. No one will want to read all this nonsense about the sort of people we are. What I require for our files is a simple, straightforward record of the operations we have carried out.'

DW went on to say that, while disagreeing with Bevan's assessment, he secretly felt relieved to be free of the job, and that he kept the original, and about how useful it came to be when he wrote 'The Deception Planners'. As we shall see later on, DW kept rather more than that!

The story of how DW's History came to its abortive end is told slightly differently in DW's unpublished memoirs and in his contemporary correspondence.
