Away from these friends, DW had been a huge fan of Winston Churchill's from even before the war, but although he was on cordial terms with hosts of the most senior people in the British war machine, DW never met Churchill - although he came close with the Wingate 'Whisky and Soda' incident.

This was because although DW was the LCS liaison with Air Force personnel and friends with a number of members of Churchill's 'inner sanctum', it was Bevan who was the confidant of both Alanbrooke and Churchill. Both DW and Wingate (and probably the others) admired Churchill enormously, and DW went so far as to 'souvenir' a couple of ashtrays that Churchill had used in his wartime conferences. After the war, Churchill agreed to be the dedicatee of DW's book 'Saturdays with Bricks'. It must have helped that he and DW (and General Alexander, for that matter) had the hobby of Bricklaying in common.
