Digging on Hampstead Common

Part of the drill in early 1915 was to march to Hampstead Heath and dig practice gunpits in the grounds of Grand Duke Michael's private estate.

One day a press photographer took some pictures and the next morning to their surprise DW and his fellow officers saw one of the photos in a newspaper with the caption "Our boys on the Western Front".
