Bertie Davis 1915

Bertie Davis

Albert ("Bertie") Davis joined the City of London Territorial Royal Field Artillery at the same time as DW. DW described him as a "blue eyed fellow, always laughing and a great enjoyer of life". Davis was a young solicitor who had recently qualified and set up on his own. He and DW rented a small furnished flat where they could entertain young ladies away from their parents' gaze. As DW wrote "naughty boy indeed ! How wonderful it was to be young."

Davis left the brigade in 1916 for active service, but after some six months he was invalided back home.

He was the best man at DW's first wedding, and after the war he set up practice in Bermondsey, where he ran unsuccessfully for M.P. DW wrote that Davis became a fine solicitor and was much involved in charity work; getting DW to come down and speak from time to time as guest of honour.
