The death of Douglas Sharp

Douglas Sharp was DW's closest childhood friend. They knew each other from the age of five, and they lived a few doors away from each other. When DW was expelled from Dulwich, Mrs Sharp took pity on him and arranged for him to stay with her family until things calmed down and DW’s father arranged where he would go next.

Douglas was killed in action in the Libyan desert on September 15th 1916, age 19. While on a patrol in the Libyan desert when he was poisoned by a camel bite and died before he could be got to hospital.

This memorial portrait was found in DW's papers.
