From the beginning, DW’s Library was not a random accretion of books. As the above exhibits show, DW planned in his mind the proportion of his Library that would be devoted to each subject, and then he went meticulously about planning his shelf space.

Of course as he grew famous and as other authors presented him with signed copies of their books, this early plan must have been somewhat disrupted – but disrupted in interesting ways.
