The London Controlling Section was so secret that for a long time it did not even appear on the fortress basement’s organisational charts, and as this exhibit shows, even a general needed a special pass to see Squadron Leader Wheatley.

In this case the general was Major General Archibald Maxwell Craig, who was Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence between 1938 and 1940, and was at the time of this note Commandant of the Chatham Division of the Royal Marines.
