DW’s inscription in Walter Pater’s ‘The Renaissance’:

This book belonged to my great friend of the early twenties, Gordon Eric Gordon Tombe (the face of the satyr in the book plate (that) was done by Papé from a portrait of Eric). I first shared a hut with him as a brother officer at Luton, from February till August 1917 (I then went overseas). It was Eric who interested me in good literature and ancient religions; and I owe to him an inestimable debt. He was murdered in 1923.

Comments:

Eric repeatedly urged me to read this work and finally I bought it. The style is beautiful, and the description of La Gioconda magnificent. His words are music. I finished it the day I met Nancy, and had it in my hand at the time of meeting.
