BOXED SET (Volumes 1-6)
The Lymington edition issues, with their distinctive black cloth bindings and gilt lettering, were produced by Hutchinson from 1961 to 1975, with reprints appearing up to 1979. Excluding the crime dossiers, they covered all 53 of Wheatley's published fiction titles up to 1971, plus 'Red Eagle' and 'Old Rowley'. Wheatley's last three novels, 'The Strange Story of Linda Lee', 'The Irish Witch' and 'Desperate Measures', were never included.
The jackets of all the 1960s issues, with the possible exception of 'Red Eagle' (47 titles) appear to be illustrated by Robert Graham, although he was not credited on a number of titles. The distinctive spines of the jackets for the 1st editions are coloured according to the series: black for the occult titles, blue for other de Richleau titles, red for other Gregory Sallust titles, yellow for Roger Brook (with the exception of the Ravishing of Lady Mary Ware, which is in white), green for all the other fiction titles and orange for the non-fiction titles.
Judging from the second-hand market, the majority of the print run of both 1st editions and reprints was taken up by the public lending libraries across the United Kingdom, and ex-library copies with sealed jackets and missing front free end papers can be found in most second-hand shops.
The details and the artwork which follow are accurate for the edition dates but some of the reprint issues may have different artwork that I have not yet seen. I am still adding to the collection and will update the information as I get it.
