1926 - 1930: 12 Chepstow Place

Chepstow Place

12 Chepstow Place as it is now

DW’s father felt his grandson should have separate night and day nurseries instead of the single room that was all that space allowed at 20a, so using funds from his grandfather’s trust DW bought a long lease on 12 Chepstow Place. DW described it as a pleasant little house with a small garden at the rear, and later recalled how he built a miniature trench system in the garden and played in it with his son Anthony.

For various reasons DW was struggling financially, but in the early part of 1927 his father died and his financial situation improved. Sadly, his marriage was in difficulties, and in early 1930 the house was sold; Nancy leaving for a flat in Chepstow Villas, and DW – who had taken up with his second wife to be, Joan – moved to Manson Mews.
